 June 2013 The Rev. Dennis H. Holtschneider, C.M., president, honored 258 faculty and staff who reached major milestones in their DePaul careers at the 25th annual Distinguished Service Awards May 17 at the Chicago Cultural Center. The anniversaries ranged from five to 45 years of service. The luncheon was sponsored by the Office of Mission and Values.

Dennis H. Holtschneider, C.M., president of DePaul University; Jim Reilly, CEO of the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority; and Jorge Ramirez, president of the Chicago Federation of Labor. The ambitious plan, named “Elevate Chicago,” includes construction of a 10-000 seat multipurpose events center to serve as the new home for the DePaul Blue Demons. Dennis Holtschneider, C.M., president, in top-left photo) was honored at a luncheon in May at Cortelyou Commons. The luncheon celebrated the first full year of the Mitchem Fellows Program, sponsored by DePaul University’s Center for Access and Attainment. The Mitchem Fellows Program provides a pathway into the McNair Scholars Program, which helps prepare underrepresented students for doctoral studies. Students from both programs attended the luncheon. The book is third in a series on college student expectations, aspirations, academics, attitudes, values, beliefs, social life and politics, and presents a portrait of today’s undergraduate college students. View Photos  March 2013 Colleagues, friends and family of Jackie Taylor, founding dean of the College of Communication, bid her farewell at the Union League Club on March 8. Taylor, who is leaving DePaul after 32 years to become provost of the College of New Jersey, was presented a Via Sapientiae award—the highest faculty-staff honor—by the Rev. Dennis Holtschneider, C.M., president. She was lauded by a variety of speakers for her extraordinary leadership and for creating an entrepreneurial and collegial culture dedicated to high-quality, engaged learning.
Photos by Jeff Carrion/DePaul University View Photos  March 2013 DePaul’s partnership with Working in the Schools (WITS), a nonprofit organization that promotes literacy and a love for learning among Chicago Public School students, expanded to a second college this winter when 40 Driehaus College of Business staff and students began tutoring third-graders from Everett Elementary School.
Twenty students from the McKinley Park neighborhood school are bussed to the college for hour-long, one-on-one tutoring sessions each Thursday. Volunteers read with the children and offer homework help. The initiative was organized by Matthew Krause, business manager for the college’s Driehaus Center for International Business (pictured in the fifth photo, with WITS Program Coordinator Ellen Werner)
With help from their business school tutors, the Everett students recently began writing pen pal letters to children from Ruggles Elementary School, who are mentored weekly by College of Communications faculty, staff and students across the street. Each year, Jin brings together students from China, DePaul’s Chinese Studies students and performers, representatives from the Chicago Chinese Cultural Institute and residents from Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhood to celebrate the incoming Chinese New Year.
“Traditionally, the snake is a symbol of intelligence in Chinese culture,” says Li Jin, director of the Chinese Studies Program at DePaul University. View Photos  January 2013 DePaul celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day by hosting its annual prayer breakfast in the Student Center at the Lincoln Park Campus. Elizabeth Ortiz, vice president for Institutional Diversity and Equity, delivered opening remarks.
The event was highlighted with a speech by Mark Anthony Neal, a professor of Black Popular Culture in the Department of African and African-American Studies at Duke University. He has written and lectured extensively on black popular culture, black masculinity, sexism and homophobia in black communities, and the history of popular music. He highlighted the importance of social media to the African-American community and the impact they have on Twitter and Facebook.
After the speech, members of The Theatre School delivered a theatrical performance on social media, which was written and directed by Dexter Zollicoffer. The prayer breakfast culminated with closing remarks by Rico Tyler, associate vice president for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
